T5: Christmas Albums

As much as I'd like to tell you that you'll love these albums as much as I do...I'm not sure you will.

Christmas is just such a sentimental holiday, so even though I laughed...out loud...when my friend told me one of her favorite Christmas albums is N*SYNC's, I can't hate on her album 'cause it's my mantra that when it comes to Christmastime,
There's no movie too cheesy
no song too juvenile
and no ornament too gaudy.

I proved this the other night when I chose to watch 12 Dates of Christmas.  ...Don't ask.

But yes, Christmas gets a free pass from me. period.

So with that, here are my Top 5 Christmas albums...

5. Silent NightMahalia Jackson
Okay...this one is 100% nostalgia.  Pretty sure she wouldn't make the list if it were just my taste on the music, but this was the staple album played at our house when decorating the tree each year, so it simply isn't Christmas until Ms. Jackson sings.

4. These Are Special Times - Celine Dion
I know...it's Celine Dion.  She can be a little too pop-ish...but I will stand by my opinion that she is one of the most talented female voices of our day, so needless to say, I have yet to hear a rendition of O Holy Night that matches that of hers.  She has consistently sung me through every Christmas since 1998 when this album was released, and as a result, I have some of my coziest memories tied to her songs.

3. When My Heart Finds Christmas - Harry Connick Jr.
My sister, Heidi, was a big Harry Connick Jr. fan growing up.  She also introduced me to Bella Fleck, James Taylor, and Frank Sinatra...so I figured her taste was pretty solid.  I may love this album so much 'cause I think of her and I'm home in an instant whenever I hear it.

2. Christmas Through The Years: Reader's Digest - Various Artists
This may be my favorite compilation of Christmas music...it's a great collection.  I was introduced to I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause, All I want for Christmas, and Christmas in Killarney....all from this collection.

1. The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole
This album gets my #1 spot simply because if I were to put all my favorite Christmas sights, sounds, smells into one voice, it would be that of Nat King Cole.  His is the sound of a fire in the fireplace, hot chocolate, christmas lights, and all the best of the season.

There are about 15 more albums I could have named, but they'll have to wait their honorary mention next year. :)

Have a great weekend!

Of course...these are all on my lists as well...I would have to add my John Rutter Christmas album and Martina McBride is fun because she sings in the perfect range for me to belt out White Christmas with her! Maybe it's a good thing I lost that one...
Also, Nat is so timeless, That is my kids' favorite Christmas album too. they would also choose The Nutcracker and Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas too.

I'm also kind of shocked Kathleen Battle wasn't on your list!!

Ooooh Kathleen. She was definitely considered, but at the end of the day, she got cut from the list because as obsessed as I am with her "O Come All Ye Faithful", I can't say that I consistently listen to the whole album every year...maybe she'll make it next year. ;) A Charlie Brown Christmas was also very close to making it, and all things John Rutter are amazing. :)
